The black-haired boy organizing the patients into neat lines was Shinichi. When he saw Rino start to breathe more heavily, panting, he called out to the crowds of people.

“Okay, that’s all the healings for today! If you don’t have a life-threatening condition, please come back again tomorrow!”

“Whaaat?!”

The people in the line groaned in disappointment, but none showed anger. After all, the healings were free. They didn’t have a right to be irritated—in fact, most of them were just grateful. Besides, they knew that if they made a scene, they’d be sent away and miss the main event of the day.

There was one troublemaker who didn’t know what was going on and made a whiny fuss. “What the hell is this?! You made your customers wait for nothing!”

Shinichi didn’t bother countering him—that they’d hardly be called customers, since they weren’t paying a single dime.

A group of men in peculiar little clothes had been waiting patiently in the distance, but when they heard the squabble, they swarmed around the rabble-rouser.

“Thou must not incite chaos on these grounds. I bid thee leave!”

“Hyah!”

“““Who the hell do you—agh!”””

The men didn’t hesitate to throw a few punches to his gut, silencing him, before dragging him away.

Shinichi followed with his eyes before calling out the to leader of the group, a round and portly young man. “Captain, thanks for your help again today.”

“Ah, m’lord Shinichi. I would not be a true fan if I did not help dispose of the rubbish,” he announced, proudly displaying his strange clothing—a Japanese happi coat and headband. “It shames me to see such impropriety from a citizen of this city.”

“Ha-ha, you’re something else, Captain.” Shinichi laughed as he thanked the captain.

He didn’t know if it was some quirk of the translation spell, but his speech was translated a bit like some Shakespearean sonnet.

“Well I hope you enjoy yourself!”

“Most certainly, with utmost vigor!”

They flashed each other a thumbs-up, and Shinichi left the group of boys in charge of organizing the onlookers as he went back behind the wooden stage. A hired minstrel was tuning his lute.

“All ready?” Shinichi asked.

“Ready whenever you are,” he replied with a quick test strum across the strings of his lute.

Shinichi smiled in response before walking back to the side of the stage to give the maid her instructions.

“Celes, let’s go.”

“Understood. Darkness.”

Celes’s spell coated the entire area, deepening the already dim shadows cast by the city walls.

“They’re gonna start! They’re gonna start!”

The crowd started to buzz with excitement as the sound of the lute began to flow gently through the air. At first, the soft notes trickled in, like a gentle breeze, but they suddenly blazed with energy, blasting through the darkness as a rainbow-colored Light spell lit the stage and revealed a silhouette standing in the very center.

Her glossy black hair was pulled into adorable little pigtails on either side of her head. She wore a short plaid skirt and vest, designed by Shinichi, weaved by one of the Arachne spider ladies. Her fluttering clothes captivated the audience, filling their eyes with this rare, otherworldly design.
